The Pit Room Houston Review: Is This BBQ Spot Worth the Hype?

If you find yourself in Houston and craving authentic Texas barbecue, The Pit Room is likely already on your radar.

Set in a simple building with both indoor and outdoor seating, this no-frills spot doesnโ€™t rely on aesthetics to draw a crowdโ€”the line out the door does that on its own.

And from the moment we arrived, it was clear something good was waiting inside.

The setup is straightforward. Order at the counter, grab your trays loaded with classic Texas comfort food, and prepare for some good eats.

Thereโ€™s nothing overly polished about the spaceโ€”but thatโ€™s part of the charm.

Places like this donโ€™t need the extras. The focus is entirely on the food.

The Food Breakdown

Pulled Pork Loaded Frito Pie

This was easily one of the standout dishes of the visit.

A heaping portion layered with perfectly seasoned pulled pork, crispy Fritos, cheese, sauce, and onionsโ€”it was rich, indulgent, and more than enough to share.

Ribs

Tender and fall-off-the-bone, these delivered exactly what you want from Texas BBQ. Flavorful, well-cooked, and satisfying.

Elote

Perfectly done. Balanced, flavorful, and one of the best sides on the table.

Mac and Cheese & Potato Salad

Both leaned heavily into nostalgiaโ€”thick, creamy, and reminiscent of homemade comfort food. Nothing overly complex, but exactly what you expect and want alongside barbecue.

Tacos

While generously filled with meat and cheese, the tacos didnโ€™t stand out compared to the rest of the menu. They were goodโ€”but not worth prioritizing when there are stronger options available.

Final Verdict

This was a thoroughly enjoyable lunch. While not inexpensive, the quality and portion sizes justify the price.

If youโ€™re visiting The Pit Room, our recommendation is simple:

Skip the tacos. Go all in on the meat.

The pulled pork and ribs are where this place truly shinesโ€”and for once, we both agreed: this oneโ€™s a hit.
